Supermarkets: The New Nightlife Hotspot
Driving from Berkeley, California to Daly City takes about an hour, but with the infamous traffic in the state, it can often take even longer. For Kaithleen Apostol, making the trip every two weeks isn’t a simple task, but she believes that the "Late Night Madness" event at Seafood City supermarket is truly worth it. She attended for the first time to celebrate Filipino History Month and has since returned three more times with her boyfriend and friends. She even brought her mother along, who agreed that having a DJ in a Filipino supermarket is not unusual at all. "Any gathering can turn into a party," Apostol shares about her culture. "You don’t need a reason to celebrate."
Shopping to the Beat
The checkout counters have been replaced with DJ tables, but the supermarket's layout remains unchanged. The atmosphere is vibrant, featuring a menu inspired by street food in the grab-and-go sections. People dance while they shop, and it’s not like Whole Foods, which just cranks up the music volume on weekends. "We’re not just playing music; we’re building a community based on music and celebrating the culture where it thrives," Apostol explains.
A New Lifestyle Trend
This event embodies a shift in how people socialize, offering alternatives to nightlife that don’t revolve around alcohol, and fostering community through cultural sharing. Apostol struggles to recall the last time she heard budots music—a genre of electronic music originating from Davao City, Philippines—in a public space. She feels that the supermarket atmosphere resembles a big family party from back home. "You could be eating a plate of lechon and just look over to see everyone dancing together. I even ran into a cousin I hadn't seen in ten years, as well as my high school economics teacher. It was such a surprise!"
DJ JP Breganza and His Unique Vision
For DJ JP Breganza, this is exactly the point of the event. He has gained fame for his performances at unique venues like the Bay Area Cliffs. An Instagram user suggested he "try doing this at Seafood City." Luckily, his idea coincided with the launch of the supermarket's first night markets. Breganza was invited by the supermarket’s marketing team to perform in Daly City. Subsequent events for Filipino History Month and many others have been organized in collaboration with a local nonprofit.

From Supermarket to Community
Late Night Madness initially launched as a way to attract younger customers seeking new experiences. This event has expanded to other Seafood City locations across California and states like Nevada, Texas, Canada, and most recently, Chicago. The saturation of nightlife, low wages, and alarming stories about safety in clubs prompted Breganza to think about new opportunities. Seafood City embraced his vision of what a Filipino party could look like.
Music from the Bodegas
Similarly, in the Bronx, NY, the DJ group MUNDO has brought unique raves to bodegas, refreshing nightlife with culturally infused parties. They say hosting events in bodegas is a natural choice. Realizing many familiar faces at performances in Brooklyn and Manhattan, they found that there are few spaces for partying in the area. "Bodegas are the heart of the community," DJ Guari explains. "You can buy anything, mingle with others, and ultimately have conversations that make you feel at home."
The Coffee Party Craze
Coffee parties are also gaining popularity, investing in high-quality sound systems and hosting daytime events with DJs to create a similar vibe, but without the need to stay out past 5 PM. "Coffee clubbing" has seen significant interest, with Eventbrite reporting a 300% increase in Atlanta alone last year. These spaces and events are sparking awareness and dialogue between generations and communities. Organizers harness the power of connecting attendees across cultural or economic barriers through the language of music and dance.
Back to the Streets, Back to Life
Santo Cafe at Paraíso Taqueria & Mezcaleria in Washington, D.C. has attracted attention from all ages since launching "coffee raves" in July. Creative director and organizer Tahmina Ghaffer says she wants to keep the dance floor a place to "energize, not recover." "We wanted a daytime party where you don’t have to wait all day and fight off fatigue at night or deal with a hangover the next day," she explains. "Being able to go to a fun party on the weekend in a café feels inclusive and accessible. It’s for everyone."
Life is shifting from underground to the spotlight, and the best party may just be around the next aisle or on a nearby corner.
