Update on United Airlines' New Contract Negotiations

Last week brought some exciting news for the flight attendants at United Airlines, as they may soon be signing a new contract after a lengthy negotiation process. Now, specific details about the contract have been released, so let’s dive in!

Temporary Agreement Between AFA and United Airlines

The Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and United Airlines have announced that they have reached a temporary agreement for a new contract covering 30,000 flight attendants. Recently, we’ve seen most major airlines in the U.S. negotiating new contracts for their crews post-pandemic. However, Delta stands out as the only airline without an official union; they have proactively raised wages but haven’t negotiated contracts in the same manner as their competitors.

United is the last major airline whose flight attendants are still without a new contract. In mid-2025, a temporary agreement was proposed, but attendants voted against it with a 71% disapproval rate. This negotiation process has been quite drawn-out, leading to tension between management and the union.

Details of the New Contract

Details of the temporary agreement have now been disclosed. Voting among flight attendants will take place from April 23 to May 12, and if approved, the new contract will take effect on May 31, 2026. In recent years, United has improved its financial situation, gradually recovering from difficulties and moving forward. They also benefit from a significant labor cost advantage, as many employee groups are still without a new contract.

Improvements in the New Contract

Looking back to 2025, when flight attendants initially voted on the first contract, the agreement included quite attractive terms. Industry-leading wages, retroactive bonuses, and improvements in quality of life aspects such as hotels, scheduling, and rest periods were proposed. In the first year, attendants will receive 40% of the total economic improvement.

However, the flight attendants are seeking a truly industry-leading contract. In fact, this new agreement brings several specific improvements compared to the previous one. Notably, the base salary will see an increase, there will be limits on night flight hours, and additional compensation for flights longer than 2.5 hours.

Special Highlights from the New Contract

With this contract, attendants will also receive retroactive bonuses for previous years, calculated as a percentage of eligible earnings. For example, they will receive 4% of their wages for the months from September to December 2021, 4% for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, 22% for 2025, and 25% for the months from January to May 2026.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the potential of the new contract has been acknowledged after flight attendants strongly rejected the proposed contract in 2025. We now have a clear understanding of the new contract's details, and many improvements have been made. Hopefully, flight attendants will be satisfied with this agreement, and it will be approved soon, easing tensions between management and staff.

It will be interesting to see how this impacts United's financial situation in the future.
