Two music-loving friends explore China with their children, bonding through new experiences. Don't miss the chance to learn about this unforgettable trip!
Starting from Friendship
Pat O’Neill and Mark Wilson have been friends for 20 years, ever since they met at a party in Melbourne. Their friendship has weathered many ups and downs, from their shared passion for music to the heart-wrenching loss of both their fathers.
In 2015, Pat was part of Mark's wedding, and they gradually transitioned from rebellious youth to family men. Now with families of their own, they recently decided to embark on a family trip to China with their kids.
The Trip to China
Pat, who works for Intrepid Travel, came up with the idea for this trip while reminiscing about memories and places they had yet to explore. “It’s exciting to visit somewhere neither of us has been before,” Mark shared.
And so, they, along with their two children—Louis and Goldie—set off to discover China. However, the journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. Goldie, Mark's daughter, was not a fan of Chinese cuisine, opting to eat only rice during their stay. In contrast, Louis was a “brave eater,” always eager to try new dishes.
Bonding Through New Experiences
Despite their differences in culinary preferences, Pat and Mark found a deeper connection as they explored the unique culture of China together. They engaged their children in this adventure by visiting food streets in Xi'an and seeking out local bars to immerse themselves in the local vibe.
“We went to many places and the kids had a great time playing together. They made friends with kids from various countries, including a German family, and by the end of the trip, the child from that family could speak English!” Mark excitedly recounted.

Memorable Moments in Yangshuo
In Yangshuo, the whole family participated in a fun activity—cycling through rice fields. However, since there were no suitable bikes for small children, they switched to small motorbikes with sidecars. “It was a fantastic experience taking the kids on a ride through the expansive fields,” Pat noted.
This trip was not only an opportunity for the dads to put aside the daily grind but also a chance for them to reflect on their roles within their families. “We had so many valuable experiences, not just for the kids but also for ourselves,” Pat shared.
Lessons from the Journey
This trip helped Mark and Pat realize the importance of travel and opened a new chapter in their relationships with their children. “Traveling is a crucial part of educating our kids,” Mark emphasized.
Returning to Melbourne, the two men brought back more than just special memories; they returned with a stronger bond with their children and a fresh perspective on their roles as dads.
Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you're planning to take your family to China, keep in mind that obtaining a Chinese visa is straightforward but requires some preparation. The flight time from Vietnam (SGN/HAN) to Beijing is typically around 3-4 hours. Round-trip flight costs usually range from 5 to 7 million VND, depending on when you book.
Public transportation like trains and taxis are convenient for getting around the city. China boasts a variety of distinctive dishes, and you should try the local food in each city you visit. Remember that young children can be picky and may not enjoy new foods, so be flexible when choosing meals for them.
At the end of your journey, the most important thing is not just the places you've visited but the memories and moments you've shared with your family.
