Delta Air Lines is facing significant hurdles in launching its Airbus A321neo aircraft with flatbed seating, with expectations now pushed to 2028 for their debut in the skies.

Introduction to Delta and the Airbus A321neo

At the beginning of 2022, Delta Air Lines commenced the reception of its Airbus A321neo aircraft. To date, the airline has ordered 189 units and has taken delivery of approximately half. This model is considered Delta's new flagship aircraft, boasting a modern cabin design and excellent economic performance. Delta plans to operate the A321neo in a premium configuration, featuring flatbed seats in business class, along with economy and other seating options.

Configuration of Delta's A321neo

Delta intends to operate 21 Airbus A321neo aircraft with a unique configuration, accommodating only 148 seats (compared to the standard 194 seats). Specifically, this includes 16 Delta One seats (business class) designed to recline flat in a 1-1 layout, each with its own door for privacy; 12 Delta Premium Select seats (premium economy) arranged in a 2-2 layout, similar to domestic first class; 54 Comfort+ seats with extra legroom (arranged 3-3); and 66 seats in the main cabin (economy class, arranged 3-3).

Challenges in Certifying New Seats

While Delta has not released extensive information about the new aircraft, it has confirmed that the business class will feature a reverse herringbone flatbed seat design. However, the real challenge lies in getting these seats operational, with recent updates indicating that Delta's A321neo with flatbed seating will not take to the skies until 2028, assuming all goes smoothly.

Delivery Timeline and Aircraft Status

By October 2024, Delta will start receiving its first Airbus A321neo aircraft in the premium configuration. However, due to difficulties in certifying the new business class seats, these aircraft have been put into storage for about 18 months. Currently, Delta has opted for a temporary configuration featuring 44 business class seats, utilizing the entire planned seating space for both the business and premium economy cabins.

Temporary Solutions and Future Plans

Delta's Chief Commercial Officer, Joe Esposito, has confirmed that the flatbed seat product for the A321neo is still under development and will undergo testing. This seating is expected to be operational within the next two years, meaning we might see the A321neo flying with 44 business class seats until 2028. This delay is concerning, especially since these aircraft were initially expected to enter service by the end of 2024.

Certification Challenges

Seat certification issues are not uncommon, but Delta is facing particularly severe challenges. It is believed that Delta has selected the Safran VUE seat product for its A321neo, similar to what FlyDubai will use on its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. However, the absence of any aircraft flying with this configuration indicates ongoing certification issues.

Future Plans for the A321neo

Delta plans to use these Airbus A321neo aircraft to operate premium domestic routes. However, the question remains as to which aircraft they will replace and on which routes they will be deployed. In the past, Delta primarily used Boeing 767 and 757 aircraft for these premium routes, but the need to replace these planes is becoming urgent.

Changes in Seating Class

In reality, Delta has already begun selling premium class seating on several international flights. This premium seating is increasingly being offered by U.S. airlines on domestic routes. Delta may implement the new configuration to optimize service and enhance its competitive edge in the market.

Future Prospects for the A321neo

Delta intends to retrofit some of its 757 aircraft with standard configurations to increase capacity for other routes. Currently, Delta operates several 767-400ER aircraft on domestic routes and plans to utilize them on international routes instead of the A321neo and 767-300ER.

Conclusion

Delta is currently configuring 21 Airbus A321neo aircraft in a premium layout with 148 seats, including flatbed seating in business class, premium economy, and spacious economy seating. Although these aircraft are expected to enter service in Q3 2024, the current state of business class seat certification is severe, necessitating adjustments to the plans.
