When I first set foot in Nicaragua, I was eager to explore the ancient city of Granada, renowned for its stunning architecture and cobblestone streets dotted with vibrant cafés and bars. But what surprised me even more was that just a 20-minute journey away lies a captivating cluster of tropical islands – the Islets of Granada. This enchanting destination is teeming with wildlife, secluded bays, and unique eco-resorts.

The host at my accommodation spoke highly of this place, mentioning that it's more favored by locals than tourists. To top it off, this cluster consists of 365 islands formed from the eruption of the Mombacho volcano. My curiosity was piqued, and I knew I had to explore it right away.

Getting to the Tropical Islets

After doing a bit of research, I decided to make a spontaneous day trip. I never expected these islands to leave such a lasting impression on me. The breathtaking scenery, rich wildlife, and luxurious island villas reminded me of a Nicaraguan version of the Maldives. It felt like I was holding onto a delightful secret that I couldn’t keep to myself.

How to Reach the Islets of Granada

The islets are located in Lake Nicaragua, just east of the city of Granada. You can catch a boat from the beach near Santa Cruz, south of Granada. Public boat fares range from $10 to $15 for a 2-3 hour tour around the islands, making it a budget-friendly option. However, if you're traveling in a group or prefer a more private experience, you can rent a private boat, though be prepared for a higher price. Having a guide on board will enhance your understanding of the islands' formation and the diverse ecosystem.

Experiencing Las Isletas

As soon as I boarded the boat, it took only minutes for me to feel completely detached from Granada. The weather was beautiful, and the calm waters reflected the palm trees and sunlight. Our enthusiastic guide explained everything about the islands in both English and Spanish. Most of the passengers were locals, which made me feel warmly welcomed and well cared for.

Wildlife Encounters

Our first stop was the famous Monkey Island, home to spider monkeys and capuchins. These friendly monkeys provided perfect opportunities for capturing vibrant moments. Along the way, the guide pointed out various bird species and warned us about crocodiles lurking in the marshes, making this place feel like Nicaragua's very own 'Galapagos'.

Island Life

What struck me most was the stark contrast of life on the islands. On one side, there were humble wooden homes of fishermen, while on the other, luxurious villas belonging to celebrities and upscale resorts. I loved seeing how locals live and thrive through generations. There were charming little restaurants on the islands, but I also spotted someone cooking at home, which made the experience feel genuine and relatable.

Personal Reflections

Honestly, I didn’t expect this trip to be so enjoyable. Although it wasn't my first boat tour, this journey stood out for its authenticity and rich local culture. At times, I felt as if I was in a different world, especially when passing by the San Pablo fortress or admiring the volcanic landscapes. Most notably, it felt like I was the only tourist around, a refreshing change from the crowded tourist hotspots in Central America.
