The Journey from the Castle to the Eltz Forest

The approach to Burg Eltz is an exciting part of the adventure. You won’t catch a glimpse of the castle from afar like at a large parking lot. Instead, you start from the nearest village, Münstermaifeld, or a trailhead near Moselkern, and follow a winding path into the Eltz forest. This area is a nature reserve spanning over 300 hectares, part of the Natura 2000 network.

The hiking trail from Moselkern train station is about 4.5 km long and typically takes around an hour to walk if you’re not in a hurry. The path runs alongside the Elzbach stream, weaving through lush forests, crossing small bridges, and passing moss-covered boulders, resembling something out of a fairy tale. The sound of the flowing water fills the air before you even catch sight of the castle.

Stunning Scenery and Tranquility

As you approach, Burg Eltz emerges through the treetops—eight towers rising from a snug rocky perch, with the stream embracing three sides. The sight is truly enchanting. From the castle grounds, you won’t see any modern developments. No tacky souvenir shops, no cramped hotels, not even a tangle of power lines. This seclusion is a rare find at a renowned European landmark.

If you drive, there is a shuttle bus that takes you from the upper parking area to the entrance. However, if your health and time allow, walking through the forest offers a much richer experience. This journey lets you temporarily escape the hustle and bustle of life and immerse yourself in a more tranquil world.

Visiting Burg Eltz is free, but there is a parking fee if you arrive by car. A meal at nearby cafes costs about 300,000 VND. The best time to visit is from spring to autumn when the weather is pleasant and the scenery is at its most beautiful.
