Dive into the vibrant atmosphere of Sarajevo with our guide featuring 11 exciting activities, from the historic Baščaršija district to the charming village of Lukomir.

Discover Baščaršija (Old Town)

Baščaršija is the heart of Sarajevo, where you can wander along cobblestone streets, visit brass shops, and explore carpet stores amidst the aromatic scent of Bosnian coffee. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxing morning.

Among the historic ambiance, you might encounter locals sharing their stories about the war that impacted their lives. Don’t miss: the main square, Copper Street, a cultural intersection of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences, and Caffe Ayna - one of our favorite coffee spots in the old town.

A notable site is where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in 1914, an event that sparked World War I. Pro tip: Look up at the clock tower near the square, which uses Arabic numerals and marks the sunset as a new day begins.

Visit Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque

The Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque is the city’s main mosque, built in 1530 and featuring stunning architecture. Inside, 51 windows illuminate the beautifully decorated mihrab. The highlight for us was the fountain in the courtyard.

The mosque is open to visitors from 9 AM, provided you dress modestly (free cloaks are available). The entrance fee is 5 KM (about 2.5 EUR), and we recommend the combined ticket for 8 KM (4 EUR) to also visit the nearby madrasa.

Enjoy Coffee on Kovači Street

Kovači Street is a short pedestrian street, perfect for savoring coffee in Sarajevo. The small cafes are adorned with wooden furniture and colorful cushions. In the evenings, the atmosphere here is lively.

Try Bosnian coffee (Turkish-style coffee), served on a brass tray with a small pot for self-pouring. If you find it too bitter, don’t hesitate to add sugar, just like the locals do!

Watch the Sunset at the Yellow Fortress

The Yellow Fortress sits atop a hill above Kovači Street, just a 10 to 15-minute walk from the old town. On your way, you’ll pass by some of Sarajevo’s large cemeteries.

The fortress is free to enter and open all day. Sunset is the most beautiful time to visit, so arrive an hour early to secure a good spot. Grab some takeaway pizza from Pekara Kovači Kod Mahira to enjoy while taking in the view.

Taste the Best Baklava

Just a corner away from the mosque, Baklava Dućan is a family-run shop famous for its handmade baklava passed down through generations. Try the džandar baklava, which features walnut, almond, and hazelnut fillings.

Bosnian baklava is usually less sweet and crunchier than its Turkish counterpart, making it a must-try!

Bike Tour to Mount Trebević

A bike tour will take you up Mount Trebević along a route that traces the war path during the Sarajevo siege. It’s a fun way to explore local history.

We reached the abandoned Olympic bobsled track, where activities begin. You can also take the cable car up the mountain if biking isn’t your thing.

The Tunnel of Hope

During the siege, the Tunnel of Hope was the only route for bringing food and medicine into the city. Today, you can walk through a part of this tunnel.

The entrance fee is 20 KM (10 EUR, cash only), and the museum is about a 15-minute taxi ride from the city center.

The Village of Lukomir

Lukomir is the highest village in Bosnia, situated at an altitude of 1,495 meters. The journey there is quite adventurous and picturesque, with views of meadows and sunshine.

Make sure you have a high enough vehicle to navigate the rugged dirt roads. If you don’t have time to drive yourself, there are some interesting day hikes from Sarajevo.

Useful Information for Vietnamese Travelers

When planning your trip to Sarajevo, keep the following points in mind:

  • Visa: Vietnamese citizens need to apply for a visa before entering Bosnia & Herzegovina.
  • Getting There: You can fly from Hanoi (HAN) or Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) to Sarajevo with layovers in Doha or Istanbul.
