Lufthansa to Revamp Business Class on Airbus A380

Recently, Lufthansa announced plans to update the business class on its Airbus A380 fleet. Initially slated for 2025, the timeline has now shifted, with the official upgrade schedule announced for January 2026.

Latest Upgrade Schedule Information

The first Airbus A380 featuring the new interior is expected to enter service in the coming weeks. All eight of Lufthansa's A380s will be equipped with the new business class by mid-2027. The airline confirmed that only the business class seating will be revamped, while first class, premium economy, and economy class will remain unchanged, aside from some minor upgrades (like improved in-flight entertainment services).

Details on the New Seats

The first upgraded aircraft, registered as D-AIMC, has been in Dresden since February 1, 2026. It is anticipated to return to service soon, with all A380s being reconfigured by mid-2027. The A380 is set to start flying from Munich to Boston, Delhi, Los Angeles, Mumbai, and Washington on alternating days starting April 17, 2026.

Interestingly, Lufthansa will not be installing the new Allegris business class seats on these aircraft; instead, they have opted for a commercially available product. Specifically, they chose the Thompson Aero Vantage XL with a staggered configuration. Each seat will feature its own aisle, measuring 58 cm wide, with a minimum bed length of 2 meters. The seats will also come equipped with Bluetooth connectivity and flexible dividers.

Changes in Seat Configuration

With the reconfiguration of the A380s, the business class will see a reduction in size from 78 seats to 68. First class will remain at 8 seats, premium economy will have 52 seats, and economy will maintain 371 seats. This update underscores Lufthansa's commitment to providing the best flying experience for customers on this beloved aircraft.

Lufthansa A380 and a Smart Decision

It's fascinating to see Lufthansa's turnaround with the Airbus A380. When the pandemic hit, the airline grounded its entire A380 fleet and considered retiring the aircraft. However, due to a swift recovery in transatlantic travel demand, Lufthansa decided to bring the A380 back into service starting summer 2023. Of the original 14 aircraft, 8 have returned to operation (with 6 having been sold).

Why Not Install Allegris Seats?

Despite having new Allegris cabins, the reason Lufthansa opted not to install these seats on the A380 could be quite straightforward. Certifying new seats can be a complex process, and choosing an "off-the-shelf" product allows the airline to expedite its return to service as soon as possible.

Lufthansa Upgrading Other Aircraft

Alongside the A380 reconfiguration, Lufthansa is also updating its Boeing 747-8 aircraft. During this process, the airline will install the new Allegris seats on the lower deck while keeping the existing seats on the upper deck. This demonstrates a continuous investment in enhancing the airline's business class product.

Conclusion

Lufthansa has begun the rollout of its new business class product on its Airbus A380s. The first aircraft featuring these cabins will take to the skies in a few weeks, with all eight A380s set to be upgraded by mid-2027. The decision to select a different seating product rather than the Allegris seats reflects a smart strategy for optimizing the upgrade process. We can't wait to see what exciting experiences this new business class will bring to passengers!
