My memorable experience at San Francisco Airport with United Airlines taught me valuable lessons, particularly in handling flight disruptions.
A Long Night at San Francisco Airport
My journey with United Airlines got off to a rocky start when my aging 777-200 experienced technical issues. Waiting for hours at San Francisco Airport (SFO) made it clear that despite its long service, mechanical problems were becoming unavoidable.
I had booked a flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Chicago (ORD) on a night flight, hoping for a restful sleep in a flat bed. However, my flight was delayed due to a technical issue with another 777-200. I couldn't access the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge as planned because my flight from LAX to SFO had already been delayed.
Waiting and Unwanted Disappointments
The wait stretched from 10:40 PM until nearly midnight. The flight attendants announced that there had been an engine malfunction. Then, they informed us that a replacement plane would be dispatched from the maintenance terminal, giving me hope that the flight would still take off. But by 12:40 AM, we were forced to leave the aircraft because the replacement plane also had issues.
Imagine the frustration of over 300 passengers realizing their flight had been canceled. The airport staff seemed helpless as they announced there were no hotel rooms available and advised us to make our own arrangements. It was a tough moment, as everyone was eager to find a place to rest after a long day of travel.
Rebooking and a Wise Decision
In the midst of the chaos, I managed to rebook my flight from San Francisco to Newark (EWR) and then to Chicago, securing a seat in business class. However, I faced a difficult decision: should I look for a hotel or just sleep at the airport? Ultimately, I opted to sleep on a bench at the airport.

With a blanket I had brought along, I was able to get about 3.5 hours of sleep. While United Airlines might have refunded me if I had chosen to book a room at the Grand Hyatt, I didn’t want to waste time at that moment. Sleeping at the airport seemed like the better option.
Finding Positives at the Airport
Even at over 40, I managed to find a comfortable spot to sleep at the airport. The next morning, I woke up early and had the chance to use the Polaris Lounge, enjoying shower facilities and other amenities. These experiences reminded me that despite the challenges of travel, I could overcome them with a positive mindset.
However, I still hope that United Airlines will pay more attention to the maintenance of their aircraft. Experiencing such disruptions not only affects my journey but could also diminish the experience for many other passengers. I hope they will make improvements in the future so that no one has to go through this unpleasant situation.
Helpful Information for Vietnamese Travelers
If you are a Vietnamese traveler looking to fly with United Airlines, please note that obtaining a visa for entry into the U.S. is mandatory. Typically, you can book flights from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) or Hanoi (HAN) for around 15 million VND one-way, depending on the flight schedule and promotional offers.
In case you encounter issues at the airport like I did, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance from staff and always keep some cash handy for hotel bookings if needed. And if not, bring a blanket to sleep overnight in the waiting area. Lastly, a little tip: always track your flight status through the airline's official apps or websites to avoid unexpected situations.
