Discover the vibrant journey of the LGBTQIA+ community in Vietnam through the experiences of two local leaders from Intrepid. Learn about the evolving policies and societal attitudes shaping their world.
Pride Month in Vietnam
During Vietnam's Pride season, Intrepid had the opportunity to speak with two local leaders who proudly embrace their identities. From colorful Pride parades to the lively Lo To – Vietnam's unique drag bingo – the LGBTQIA+ community here has many ways to express themselves. While some biases still exist, government policies are gradually catching up with societal changes, fostering a burgeoning queer culture.
You can enjoy vibrant parties at gay clubs, visit queer-friendly bars, or participate in Pride activities from June to September in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, where rainbow parades weave through bustling cafes, food markets, and scenic riversides.
Representative Voices
Among Intrepid's team in Vietnam, several members identify as LGBTQIA+. Among them, Anh Vuong and Phuong Le have been with Intrepid since 2016 and 2019, respectively. As tour guides, they take pride in their identities. Phuong shares, 'I chose this profession because I don’t have to wear office attire. For me, it was an easy choice.'
Phuong also mentions that LGBTQIA+ travelers often feel safe in Vietnam: 'Vietnam isn't too strict towards the LGBTQIA+ community, and this is gradually being accepted, especially among the younger generation. In my experience, no one has shown hatred or treated you poorly.'
Diverse Experiences in Urban and Rural Areas
While queer travelers' experiences in Vietnam are generally positive, local experiences can vary significantly. Those who grew up in the South and major cities often have an easier life compared to those from more conservative rural areas and the North. This reflects the country's historical divisions, from the French colonial era to the Vietnam War.
Phuong grew up in the modern atmosphere of Ho Chi Minh City and feels it's one of the most open cities in Vietnam. 'But we've also been taught that being gay is not good. Even in major cities, you have to be cautious when discussing it.'

Slow but Steady Progress
Thirty years later, progress is slowly taking shape. Thanks to cultural exchanges and the internet, LGBTQIA+ individuals in Vietnam are becoming more confident in expressing themselves. The community is growing stronger and gaining recognition among people in major cities.
The government has also begun to make positive changes, such as abolishing penalties for same-sex marriage in 2015 and affirming that homosexuality is not a mental disorder.
A Chosen Family
Much of Anh and Phuong's experience at Intrepid has helped them feel more accepted. Anh was the first in Intrepid's Vietnam team to come out publicly, and he found it to be a natural step. 'I don’t want to represent anyone; I just want to show that sexual orientation doesn’t make a difference between us.'
Phuong also shared that she used to hide her identity, but working at Intrepid has made her feel safer in being open and always striving to connect with those around her.
Helpful Information for LGBTQIA+ Travelers
For LGBTQIA+ travelers, you don’t need a visa to enter Vietnam if you stay under 30 days and have a valid passport. However, access to LGBTQIA+ services in Vietnam remains limited, especially in rural areas. It’s wise to research bars or Pride events before you go and always respect local culture.
