Aluminum Luggage: A Timeless Choice
Aluminum luggage is always a worthy investment, much like the classic little black dress or the perfect white t-shirt. With its shiny exterior, it stands out on the luggage carousel, easily distinguishing itself from the sea of identical black bags. I’ve tried various types of luggage, and none have combined beauty and durability like aluminum luggage.
The New Collection from Carl Friedrik
Carl Friedrik, one of my favorite luggage brands, has just launched its own aluminum suitcase. This product retains the brand's signature design, featuring a sleek surface, ultra-secure double locks, reinforced steel corners, and smooth 360-degree wheels. However, it comes with a price tag of $845, which is quite an investment.
This price is significantly lower than many competitors, yet still higher than Carl Friedrik's Hybrid and Core models. I took this aluminum suitcase on two trips to Paris and Milan to see if it was worth the splurge.
First Impressions
The first thing I must mention is how stunning this suitcase is. Aesthetically, it feels like a true investment piece. Designed in the golden age of travel style, its embossed shell has a classic look that easily surpasses other suitcases.

The wheels glide effortlessly, and the sturdy leather-wrapped handle makes maneuvering in and out of airplane overhead compartments a breeze. However, one downside is its slightly smaller capacity compared to the Hybrid model, offering just 38 liters versus the 41 liters of its counterpart. If you're someone who likes to pack everything but the kitchen sink, this might be a slight drawback.
Material Quality
The suitcase is made from anodized aluminum, which is tough and durable. However, aluminum can dent, while materials like polycarbonate may not. I believe these little dents tell a story about your travels, much like the marks of adventure. After two trips, I noticed a few small dents on my suitcase.
Comfortable Interior
I was able to pack for three nights in Milan and Paris without any issues. A few outfits, sleepwear, a gym bag, a toiletry kit, and an extra pair of shoes all fit snugly. If you're heading to a warmer destination, it’s easy to stretch your packing to four or five days.
Functionality
The suitcase features a zippered compartment and a robust compression system with a steel lock. The double lock system gives me more peace of mind than a standard zip, and each lock is TSA-approved, adding an extra layer of security. The wheels roll incredibly smoothly, and the handle can be easily extended and retracted.
Conclusion
While this suitcase may not have many features that stand out compared to cheaper options, in terms of design, it truly shines. I love toting this suitcase around the airport. It’s an excellent choice for anyone seeking a quality product from a brand with London roots.
