Discover the economy class experience on the SWISS A330-300 from Zurich to Chicago, highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses to consider.
Flight Experience Overview
SWISS offers a remarkably impressive economy class product on the A330-300, featuring excellent dining options and comfortable seating. However, there are a few points to keep in mind. My flight from Zurich to Chicago marked my family's first long-haul journey since the pandemic began in 2021.
We arrived at Zurich Airport (ZRH) about two hours before our flight, hoping to avoid the long lines at passport control. While the midday crowd was noticeable, you can bypass this by taking the elevator down to the lower level. We then caught the train to the E gates and spent some time relaxing at the SWISS Senator Lounge.
Flight Details
Boarding began 40 minutes prior to our departure at gate E26. Here are some details about the flight:
- Flight: SWISS 008
- Departure: 1:05 PM from ZRH
- Arrival: 3:55 PM at ORD
- Flight Duration: 9 hours 50 minutes
- Distance: 4,443 miles
- Aircraft Type: Airbus A330-300
- Seat Numbers: 39E, F, G (Economy Class)
Seating and Amenities
As we boarded, we passed through business class and the front economy cabin to reach our seats in the rear. I had purchased a basic economy ticket, which meant our seats were assigned automatically. The A330 is configured in a 2-4-2 layout (except for rows 42-45 at the back, where it narrows to 2-3-2). We were seated in a four-seat section, with a stranger next to us in the aisle seat.
The flight was fully booked, likely due to the Easter holiday. SWISS utilizes Recaro CL3810 seats, which are somewhat comfortable but lack adequate legroom, making it challenging to work on a laptop. If you can manage to sleep in economy, the reclining feature might be beneficial for you.
Temperature and Comfort Issues
The cabin felt a bit warm, and there was no personal ventilation, a common issue with SWISS. Additionally, there were no power outlets for charging devices, so make sure your gadgets are fully charged before boarding. Each seat is equipped with a USB-A port, but the charging power is insufficient, so you might find yourself waiting a long time for a charge with little success.

Each seat comes with a blanket and pillow, which would be appreciated if the cabin were cold but was unnecessary in such a warm environment. The cabin cleanliness could also be improved, as there was quite a bit of dust and debris around the personal entertainment controls.
In-Flight Entertainment
SWISS offers an in-flight entertainment library on the seatback screen, featuring movies, TV shows, games, and music, though the selection isn't as extensive as that of United Airlines. I watched a film starring Robert Pattinson called Mickey 17. Unfortunately, the complimentary headphones weren't very effective, so I was glad I brought my own for the kids but regretted not having a pair for myself.
The long flight lasted nine hours, and the final hours were particularly challenging when the seat in front of me reclined, especially since the Wi-Fi wasn’t working. I had paid for the Wi-Fi package, but it only worked intermittently and cut out when we entered North America.
In-Flight Dining
The meal service was commendable. Shortly after takeoff, water and wet towels were served. Lunch began with delicious cheese bites, and although it wasn’t Champagne, the sparkling wine served was quite nice. In economy class, alcoholic beverages are completely free, although the Alpine Essence cocktail was not available on this flight.
Both main course options were tasty: vegetarian penne pasta and chicken thigh in cream sauce with mashed potatoes and green beans. The freshness of the salad and the quality of the bread were truly commendable — this was a 10/10 meal for economy class. Even the coffee and cake were delightful.
Overall Assessment
Despite some issues with space and temperature, the service and food quality on the flight left me feeling satisfied. The staff was very attentive, serving water and coffee multiple times throughout the meal.
In summary, if you don’t mind a bit of discomfort in economy, SWISS remains a solid choice, especially regarding food service and the attentiveness of the crew. However, improvements are needed in areas like cramped space and temperature control.
