First-Class Experience on Delta Air Lines 737-900ER from Atlanta to Chicago

Flight Overview

My two-hour flight from Atlanta to Chicago on Delta Air Lines' Boeing 737-900ER in first class was a remarkably smooth journey, complemented by outstanding service. The attentive service truly made up for the lengthy wait due to air traffic control issues.

I had initially booked a one-way ticket from Los Angeles to Chicago for $381 but later changed my route to connect through Atlanta for the opportunity to fly Delta One from LAX to ATL. This flight arrived a bit late, leaving me with only a short window to navigate from Concourse F to Concourse B at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

One detail I forgot to mention is that my flight to Chicago was originally scheduled to depart at 5:25 PM but was unexpectedly moved to 5:20 PM. I had to rush to the gate, only to find out we would be sitting on the ground for another 90 minutes due to congestion in the airspace around Chicago.

Seating

I boarded as one of the last passengers and found my seat at 3B, which was located near the aisle on the left side of the plane. The seat was quite comfortable for a domestic first-class flight, featuring a reasonable recline and ample legroom. Overall, the seat width of 20.9 inches felt spacious.

The seat controls were conveniently located on the side, and there was a small table between the seats. Standard power outlets for first class included an A/C socket and a USB-A port that worked well throughout the flight.

In-Flight Entertainment

One of Delta's strengths is its in-flight entertainment system. Each first-class seat is equipped with a screen mounted on the backrest, offering sharp picture quality and a wealth of content, including movies, TV shows, music, and flight information.

Although I didn’t finish watching a full movie, I enjoyed revisiting the classic show I Love Lucy, which I loved in my childhood. Additionally, I kept an eye on the moving map, a default entertainment option for me on flights.

While the older aircraft don’t support Bluetooth audio, Delta provides complimentary headphones for passengers. Free wireless Wi-Fi is also available for SkyMiles members on many domestic flights, including this one.

Restroom and Service

The restroom at the front of the plane is reserved for first-class passengers. Although it’s relatively small, it was well-maintained and clean. Delta also offers quality soap and hand lotion from Grown Alchemist, which is a nice touch.

Food and Beverage

Given the relatively short distance of 606 miles, the flight did not serve a full meal but provided a snack basket with items like cookies, nuts, and soft drinks. While a full meal wasn’t available, the open bar service was a convenient option for passengers.

While I understand the reason behind Delta not serving meals on shorter flights, a lighter option such as a salad or warm sandwich would have been a great addition.

Conclusion

Despite the delay and a few minor inconveniences, I had a very pleasant flying experience with Delta. The attentive service, comfortable space, and quality entertainment left a positive impression of the airline. If you’re looking for a good option for domestic flights, Delta Air Lines is definitely worth considering.
