A Night Flight with United: Not Enough Sleep but Arriving to Hallelujah

An Exciting Night Flight

My overnight journey with United Airlines from Los Angeles to Chicago was truly an adventure, even though I didn't get much sleep. Everything went smoothly, but the most memorable part came right after we landed.

Booking and Affordable Prices

Even during the busy Christmas holiday season, I managed to book my ticket a few weeks in advance for just $124.49. Compared to using reward points, this was a fantastic deal, especially since tickets closer to the departure date for the same route were priced at nearly $450 one way.

I particularly enjoy United's A321neo aircraft for its high-speed Wi-Fi and the in-seat entertainment screens. Honestly, I would choose the A321neo over the 737-900 or 757-300 any day.

Flight Duration and Seat Conditions

United Flight 1843 departed from LAX at 11:55 PM and was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 6:09 AM the next morning. I was seated in 32C in Economy Class, which has a 3-3 seating arrangement with a total of 180 seats. Economy Plus offers extra legroom, but I wasn't seated there.

Service Differences on the Flight

This flight featured new light blue blankets that were much thicker than the flimsy ones I had experienced before. United does not provide pillows on domestic overnight flights, but they do offer Wi-Fi for $8 for MileagePlus members, and texting is free.

In-Flight Entertainment and Snacks

The in-seat screens offer thousands of hours of entertainment, from movies to music. I received complimentary headphones and had several free snack options. However, 'Bistro On Board' was not available on late-night flights. I ordered a pack of cookies but honestly didn't have time to eat them.

An Unforgettable Moment

When the plane landed, the quiet atmosphere at Chicago O'Hare made me feel relaxed. Especially when the plane door opened, a song played—'Hallelujah' by Rufus Wainwright. In that moment, it felt like I was in a dream.

Final Thoughts

The kids slept soundly on the flight, while I felt a bit regretful for not being able to catch some sleep myself. We spent the entire day resting before boarding our connecting flight to Copenhagen. This experience showed me that while overnight travel can be tiring, I would still choose it again for the time saved. And hearing 'Hallelujah' after landing truly brought a wonderful feeling.
